Recycled polyester, also known as rPET, is obtained by melting down PET waste into new polyester chips.

While much attention is given to rPET made from plastic bottles and containers thrown away by consumers, in reality polyethylene terephthalate can be recycled from both post-industrial and post-consumer input materials.

Post Industrial

Post-industrial polyester refers to the waste generated during the manufacturing process. The items that are collected and recycled before they reach the consumer.

See how we can make a difference

On average, the production of 1 ton of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) releases around 2 to 3 tonnes of CO₂. The exact amount varies depending on the production process, energy source and efficiency of the plant, but most calculations are in this range.

Details on CO₂ emissions during PET production
1. Raw material: PET is made from crude oil or natural gas. The extraction and processing of the raw materials already causes CO₂ emissions.
2. Polymerization: The chemical process for producing PET requires a lot of energy and releases further emissions.
3. Energy consumption: The production facilities consume electricity and heat, the carbon footprint of which varies greatly depending on the energy source (e.g. coal, gas, renewable energies).

Conclusion
Although PET is lighter and easy to recycle, its production is associated with a considerable CO₂ footprint. Improvements in recycling can reduce emissions, as recycled PET (rPET) causes around 80 % less CO₂ emissions than newly produced PET.
